"Claudius the God" is the second of Graves' two-part story of the Roman Emperor Claudius, told in the form of an autobiography. It continues right where "I, Claudius" leaves off, at Claudius's ascendancy to Emperor following Caligula's rather bloody end/5(). Where the first novel covered the reign of Caesar Augustus as well as those of Tiberius and Caligula, the sequel is longer but mostly restricts itself to the thirteen-year reign of Claudius /5.
Sadly "Claudius the God" doesn't quite sustain the earlier standard. It has too many digressions and wordy passages that, while providing important historical facts, serve to deprive us of the intimate and intriguing relationship we enjoy in the first book.
